Testimony Thursday: Game-Changing Prayer

By Jayne Kim
My practice of prayer only started to gain momentum not too long ago. Sure, I had my fair share of one-off miracles that came with different seasons of prayer, I always put up a quick one when looking for street parking, and I even had a season where it felt like laser beams shot out of my hands whenever I prayed and lifted my hands up in worship.

Earlier last year, in an effort to be more disciplined in prayer, I framed and approached prayer as a time of debrief with God. Every night, I just shared and asked about a whole bunch of nothing’s and everything’s. I had no agenda. I just let out what was on my heart and mind that day as if sharing with a close friend.

As an external processor, I found myself looking forward to these nightly debriefs as I recognized this guy (God) actually wants to hear everything I have to say, and he has no judgment about it. Nothing was too stupid, too embarrassing, too boring or too selfish for him to hear. I didn’t have to worry about being misunderstood or being politically/culturally correct. I had the freedom to express with the guarantee of being heard and accepted no matter the content. That was a game changer.

I think it was in this new perspective and confidence that drew me closer to the intimacies of prayer and the one I was praying to, and it’s been so sweet to experience the transformation of myself and my prayers through this.

When I say the transformation of my prayers, I’m referring to Romans 8:26 - how the Spirit intercedes for us in prayer. If you know, you know, but if you don’t, that’s okay, but this post is not the place to dissect that. All I’ll say is that sometimes, I find myself unexpectedly laughing, bawling or in complete shock as I literally hear my prayers shifting direction or pressing into new topics. But that’s also when it gets super exciting for me because when the Spirit intercedes, you know it’s about to go down.
